The map shows the borders after the Treaty of Brest, which was signed between Germany and the Soviet Republic on March 3, 1918, and which ended Russia’s participation in World War I. Under the treaty Russia ceded most of Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic states to Germany. The treaty was annulled by the Treaty of Versailles (1919).
