Annotatie
Le n° VDG 5040 renvoie à ce numéro, mais il s'agit en réalité du 20411 Collection of 102 emblems, some also in Greek, by the Rhetores of the Brussels Jesuit college from 1652. The first part consists of a folded title page, a folded drawing, an introduction "Ad spectatorem" followed by an explanatory text "Quaenam emblematum affixorum fuerint ornamenta, et quis ordo", and 102 emblems. They all have a maritime theme but 5 of them that are full-page are also focused on Sapientia. Coats of arms (Gonzaga, de Rubempré, T'Serclae) are added to 3 emblems. Some emblems contain passages from the Proverbs, Wisdom, Georgics, Aeneid, and Metamorphoses. The first part is dedicated to Leopold Wilhelm of Austria who at that time had conquered Gravelines and was besieging Dunkirk. The second part contains a poem also composed by the Rhetores of the Brussels Jesuit college. The poem is proceded by the 40 titles of each folio and "Ad lectorem". The numbers on the margins of the poem inform about the exact content of each folio.
