Abstract
Le Drapeau rouge was the organ of the Belgian Communist Party. The Newspaper resulted from the fusion of two magazines: L'Exploité and L'Ouvrier communiste. Joseph Jacquemotte introduced it as a weekly in Brussels in October 1921. On 1 January 1924, it became a daily, only to become a weekly again on 3 October 1929. Under the new name La Voix du Peuple it became a daily again from October 1936. In October 1939, at the beginning of the Second World War, the newspaper was banned by the government, but it reappeared clandestinely in February 1941. After the arrest of the director, Pierre Bosson, Félix Coenen took over the direction of the paper. Le Drapeau rouge officially reappeared in October 1944. It became a daily in October 1944, a weekly in October 1966 and a daily again in January 1974. Throughout its existence, the newspaper remained true to its communist ideas until it was discontinued in the 1990s.
