Abstract
The Brussels liberal daily La Dernière heure was launched in April 1906 on the initiative of a group of young liberals. It was the first Belgian newspaper with a sports section, thus promoting sports in Belgium. It had two daily editions (a morning and an evening edition). It also stood out because of its distinctive typography, inspired by the major British newspapers. In 1908, it launched a popular edition called La Petite feuille de La Dernière heure. The newspaper’s subtitle was “Le plus grand journal belge, le mieux renseigné”; replaced in 1970 by “Le quotidien actuel”. Publication was interrupted during both world wars. In the 1970s, director Maurice Brébart united Le Dernière heure and La Libre Belgique, and the two newspapers became part of the same press group, S.I.P.M. At the same time, La Dernière heure joined forces with Les Sports, a Brussels sports daily that had been founded in 1908. In 1982 the latter stopped publishing, and the two titles were merged into La Dernière heure-Les Sports. Today, this newspaper has a popular and sensational reputation.
