Actes de la recherche en sciences sociales is a quarterly journal published in French. Created in 1975 by Pierre Bourdieu and his fellow scholars, it proved to be a landmark in French-language social science publications as it strived to reconcile expectations that had previously been considered exclusive: to appeal to scholars and students in the social sciences while aiming for a wider audience interested in social issues. The journal meets high scientific standards, yet aspires as ardently to confront problems related to current events. Although sociology has a central place, the journal holds a unified conception of the social sciences, which quite regularly leads to articles published by historians, political scientists, economists, and other scholars.
The journal’s form also breaks with academic routine. The articles published consist of research at various stages of progress (from a note in the design phase to the “finished product”) and are all based on a single issue that is developed theoretically and tested in different original empirical fields. Hence, with a few exceptions, each issue forms a whole in which the articles respond to and complement one another. Since its beginnings, the journal has also exhibited innovative design in its intensive use of documents (photographs, archives, investigative materials, press clippings, etc.) which, at times, are just as illustrative as the text.
Over time, Actes de la recherche en sciences sociales has acquired a strong international dimension. It has contributed to introducing the French-speaking public to important research conducted abroad, and the issues often combine analyses dedicated to different national interests.
Journal recognized by the CNRS, and published with the support of the Centre de sociologie européenne, of the Collège de France, of the Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme, of the l’Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales, of the Centre national de la recherche scientifique and of the Centre national du livre.
